Jersey Canada Activity Levels - Top Notch!
A couple of quite astounding things happened as of the end of July and we’d like to share them with y’all briefly!
- A new record for electronic registration submissions in July: 66%!! We are now at 52.3% for the year to date. 55% is quite likely for the entire year…maybe 60%?
- New herd prefixes now at 112 for the year! Total for all of 2007 was 134. We are 65% ahead of 2007 YTD!! We’re now at 622 new herd prefixes since January 2004!
- Registrations up 5.7% YTD, Transfers up 14.2% YTD, Memberships are up 2.9%, and exports are at 595 to August 11.
It is possible that we could have the best two years for registrations since 1991/ 1992. We will very likely be as good as 1998/1999.
We must ensure that the right infrastructure is in place to support this kind of growth! One good cause for careful rejoicing is that 2007 was a very good year! Bottom line: Jersey business in Canada is booming!

3rd Prize: $150 semen voucher from Select Sires Canada, donated by Shawn Moffat, NB
4th Prize: One night stay at the Holiday Inn Select in downtown Halifax.

Just like seeing the movie stars in person
This has been a truly exicting late winter and early spring for Jersey Canada in about 5,000 different ways! One of the big treats for us was the arrival of a large study tour group from South Africa and Australia on April 9. The tour was organized by the Semex Alliance, head-quartered right here in Guelph. They worked with Semex SA and Semex Australia/New Zealand to put an exciting nine-day program together!
Among the visitors were Semex SA staff and 18 dairy producers from South Africa and one intrepid Aussie, Wayne Kuhne of the famed Bushlea herd at Gippsland in the state of Victoria in the land "down-under"!
We could tell you of a long string of highlights for the group as they travelled across Ontario and Quebec seeing great Jersey herds and meeting wonderful, welcoming Jersey owners.
For today, however; just one brief story!!
On Wednesday, April 17 the first port of call was Semex partner unit CIAQ at St-Hyacinthe, Quebec. One portion of the visit to CIAQ was seeing five members of Semex's proven sire team in the unit's clean and very tidy barns. While they had to be viewed through glass, for health reasons, it was still a special moment for the group as they observed Pine Haven Senior; Bridon Remake Comerica; Hollylane Lilibet's Legacy; a sprightly SHF Centurion Sultan set to be ten years young on June 1st, and new number one LPI sire Lencrest Blackstone. Cameras and cell phones flashed as picture after picture of these lads were made.
Once the photo taking and viewing/gazing session was over it was off to two exciting and informative farm visits at Elmsmead and Lencrest in Quebec's scenic Eastern Townships. Later that evening as the tour bus approached St-Hyacinthe again one of the younger South African visitors came forward to the front of the bus and made a very interesting observation. He said, more or less, "I know it is only looking at a bunch of mature Jersey bulls earlier today. However, some of us have used a lot of semen from some of these bulls in our herds. Seeing them today was neat because it was just like watching a movie with big stars acting in it and then going out in public and seeing those movie stars in person and live, right in front of you!" Neat perspective!
We'll do some more blogging about this historic visit of keen and capable Jersey breeders in later blogs! For now, Jersey on!
