Jersey Energization in Quebec!

Whilst it was a wild and wooly day weather-wise in Quebec on Friday the Select Celebration Sale was a very bright spot in the winter weather! In total 38 head of Jerseys sold for an average of just over $2825-my unofficial figures. Leading the way were 26 milking cows who averaged $3215, led by a $13,500 top price for Select-Scott Sultan Maggie, a daughter of JIL Little Minnie who sold to Bruce Rendon in Michigan. The other 25 cows averaged $2804. 8 bred heifers averaged just under $2100 and four open heifers averaged $1775.

"The story behind the story" is where things get even more interesting. There was a good crowd on hand considering the weather. Marie-Claire and Jean-Marc concur that there were at least four new buyers. One of them is a member of a very well-regarded Holstein family in Quebec. In another instance we met a daughter of a former Jersey breeder from the Bas St-Laurent region. In 1987 the family had a barn fire and when her father Daniel Gagnon rebuilt he set up a Holstein herd because of prevailing milk pricing and quota policies at the time. This young woman farms with her husband and they had a couple of Jerseys before Friday and at least three more afterward. Her brother is at the home farm with their father and he now has at least four or five Jerseys in the home herd again. Quite something to see people come back into the breed after such a long time away!

Jean-Marc noted that over the past two weeks he has signed up six new members for Jersey Canada. One day he made three farm stops and signed up three new members! Thus, we are now safely over the 910 members needed to be at our highest total since 1968!

Jersey Quebec recently hosted a barn meeting and Jersey information day at which about 25 people new or newer to the breed appeared in a total crowd of about 40!
While at the sale we were approached by someone who has a few Jerseys about a membership and catch up on a few transfers and registrations. Jean-Marc also made contact with two people he had heard of but had not been able to contact or track down when they appeared at the sale!

While it is a stretch to imagine that growth in Jersey numbers can still be happening at such a rapid clip, it is happening! There is more ground to be covered!

Registry Update is Exciting!

There are now 1092 herds in Canada with at least one Jersey on milk recording...an increase from 1004 just last year! Since 2001, there has been an 80% increase in the number of herds with Jerseys, in an age of decreasing herd numbers! Amazing! About 11% of Canadian dairy herds on milk recording now have one or more Jerseys!

There has also been an increase of about 10% in the number of Jersey cows on official test in Canada since 2001...with continuing increases in registry numbers, this should just continue to grow!

As of the end of November, Jersey Canada is 3.6% ahead of 2007 year-to-date for registrations. As well, Jersey Canada will have it's best membership total since 1968, with 909 members as of December 1st. There have also been 164 new herd prefixes registered in 2008, with a total of 674 new prefixes registered since Jan 2004....so exciting!!

Jersey Canada Activity Levels - Top Notch!

A couple of quite astounding things happened as of the end of July and we’d like to share them with y’all briefly!

- A new record for electronic registration submissions in July: 66%!! We are now at 52.3% for the year to date. 55% is quite likely for the entire year…maybe 60%?

- New herd prefixes now at 112 for the year! Total for all of 2007 was 134. We are 65% ahead of 2007 YTD!! We’re now at 622 new herd prefixes since January 2004!

- Registrations up 5.7% YTD, Transfers up 14.2% YTD, Memberships are up 2.9%, and exports are at 595 to August 11.

It is possible that we could have the best two years for registrations since 1991/ 1992. We will very likely be as good as 1998/1999.

We must ensure that the right infrastructure is in place to support this kind of growth! One good cause for careful rejoicing is that 2007 was a very good year! Bottom line: Jersey business in Canada is booming!

Just like seeing the movie stars in person

This has been a truly exicting late winter and early spring for Jersey Canada in about 5,000 different ways! One of the big treats for us was the arrival of a large study tour group from South Africa and Australia on April 9. The tour was organized by the Semex Alliance, head-quartered right here in Guelph. They worked with Semex SA and Semex Australia/New Zealand to put an exciting nine-day program together!

Among the visitors were Semex SA staff and 18 dairy producers from South Africa and one intrepid Aussie, Wayne Kuhne of the famed Bushlea herd at Gippsland in the state of Victoria in the land "down-under"!

We could tell you of a long string of highlights for the group as they travelled across Ontario and Quebec seeing great Jersey herds and meeting wonderful, welcoming Jersey owners.

For today, however; just one brief story!!

On Wednesday, April 17 the first port of call was Semex partner unit CIAQ at St-Hyacinthe, Quebec. One portion of the visit to CIAQ was seeing five members of Semex's proven sire team in the unit's clean and very tidy barns. While they had to be viewed through glass, for health reasons, it was still a special moment for the group as they observed Pine Haven Senior; Bridon Remake Comerica; Hollylane Lilibet's Legacy; a sprightly SHF Centurion Sultan set to be ten years young on June 1st, and new number one LPI sire Lencrest Blackstone. Cameras and cell phones flashed as picture after picture of these lads were made.

Once the photo taking and viewing/gazing session was over it was off to two exciting and informative farm visits at Elmsmead and Lencrest in Quebec's scenic Eastern Townships.
Later that evening as the tour bus approached St-Hyacinthe again one of the younger South African visitors came forward to the front of the bus and made a very interesting observation. He said, more or less, "I know it is only looking at a bunch of mature Jersey bulls earlier today. However, some of us have used a lot of semen from some of these bulls in our herds. Seeing them today was neat because it was just like watching a movie with big stars acting in it and then going out in public and seeing those movie stars in person and live, right in front of you!" Neat perspective!

We'll do some more blogging about this historic visit of keen and capable Jersey breeders in later blogs!
For now, Jersey on!

And the Celebrating Continues!

Okay, we recently told you the highly stimulating news about our 2007 membership total being at its highest level since 1968, 39 years earlier! We did not mention, in the latest posting, that our 2007 memberships were 28% above our 2001 membership level! That is more than a quarter higher in six years!
Today we have a related statistic to share with you! Through the able work of a regional Jersey promoter we were guided to a set of statistics that are totally indicative of where the Jersey breed is going in Canada! The statistics relate to the number of milk-recorded dairy herds in Canada that have a Jersey component! This may be one Jersey cow or it may be 100 cows. Anyhow, from 2001 to late 2007 the number of milk-recorded herds in Canada in which registered Jerseys are present grew from 607 to 1,004! This is an increase of 65% in six years! Aligned with this is the fact that the 1,004 herds with some Jerseys in them represent just a tiny smidge under 10% of all milk-recorded herds in Canada!
Talk about growth, talk about potential and opportunity, talk about energy and momentum! Yes, it is a changing world. With regard to dairy herds across Canada one noticable change has been that many more are now sporting a Jersey presence than was the case at the start of this decade!
We'll build on that!

Celebrating in JerseyCanadaland

In various ways Jersey Canada has been working to share some very good news from 2007 Awith the dairy world! Early in January 2008 we prepared a "wrap up" news release regarding the year we had had in 2007. And yes, we are well aware of the wisdom of the old adage about the dangers of believing your own news releases! During the process of creating the release this thought did come to mind: Can all this really be true!??

One aspect of the news we had to share was the fact that in 2007 our Jersey Canada memberships were at their highest level since 1968! Now, 1968 would be 39 years earlier!! We are quite convinced that livestock/breed associations that can lay claim to their highest membership in 39 years are pretty rare creatures in this era!

We're so thankful for even this one happening alone! This accomplishment has to say something significant about where the Jersey breed in Canada is going! This amazing level of activity is the result of years of hard work and dedication by Jersey owners across Canada. It is also a testament to the way today's Jersey cow fits the needs of today's industry!

When you stop and think about how many dairy farms there were in Canada in 1968 and how many there are today (there were about ten times as many back then!) this achievement becomes that much more amazing! We'll use what happened in 2007 as a stimulus to doing even more in 2008!
