First Jersey Exportation to Russia

120 Canadian Registered Jersey Heifers left Becancour, Quebec October 1^st, 2011 for the port of Novorossiysk, Russian Federation. Their Journey on board the M/V Murray Express is scheduled for 23 days.

The Russian buyer requested that the heifers be bred to polled Jersey bulls and plans to utilize the offspring in a crossbreeding program with the native Yaroslavl cattle that are currently in production on one of their farms. The Yaroslavl cattle are smaller framed and only produce an average of 3000 kg of milk annually and the owners believe that the introduction of the Jerseys to this herd will maintain lower frame size while increasing production and introducing the polled characteristics.

Premières exportations de Jerseys vers la Russie

120 génisses Jerseys canadiennes enregistrées ont quitté Bécancour, Québec le 1^e octobre 2011 à destination du port de Novorossiysk, en Russie. Leur voyage à bord du M/V Murray Express devrait durer 23 jours.

L’acheteur russe a demandé que les génisses soient saillies avec des taureaux Jerseys acères et il planifie utiliser la progéniture dans un programme d’accouplement croisé avec le bétail indigène Yaroslavl, présentement en production sur une de leurs fermes.  Les animaux Yaroslavl ont un plus petit gabarit et ne produisent en moyenne que 3000 kg de lait par année.  Les propriétaires croient que la venue des Jerseys dans le troupeau aidera celui-ci à maintenir une petite taille tout en augmentant la production et introduisant le trait acère.
